Imphal, October 12 2021:
A total of 8500 voters from Moirang assembly constituency joined National People's Party (NPP) and the latest development has strengthened the confidence of the party's candidate Thongam Sarat winning the 12th Manipur legislative assembly election, said deputy chief minister and NPP national vice-president Yumnam Joykumar.
A felicitation function of the newly admitted party workers was held at Mayol badminton indoor stadium, Iroishemba on Tuesday.
NPP Manipur working president LJayantakumar, deputy chief minister Y Joykumar, general secretary (administration) and intending candidate in Kshetrigao AC Shiekh Nurul Hassan, NPP Youth president and intending candidate in Khurai AC Laitonjam Jayananda, Moirang unit political affairs committee chairman Ahanthem Ingocha, Moirang Kendra Progressive Front chief advisor Y Modhu among others attended the programme.
Accepting the enrolment forms of 8500 new members of the party from Moirang AC, Joykumar said that there are several eminent personalities among the new members including several intending candidates for Kwakta Municipal Council.
He also announced merger of Moirang Kendra Progressive Front into NPP and said that the new admission of over 8000 members is a testimony of the growing popularity of NPP in the state.
The recent resignation of ex-MLA M Prithviraj from Congress and joining the BJP is also one of the reasons behind the large number of electors joining the party.
People of the constituency think that it is a plot to ensure BJP's win by merging the vote banks of BJP and Congress and they are not happy with such tactics, Joykumar contended.
He further said that NPP is planning to field candidates in at least 35 assembly constituencies and the party is confident of winning 20 plus seats and emerge as a single largest party.
Both BJP and Congress will win fewer seats.
Several sitting MLAs and key members of different parties are on their way to join NPP but the party cannot reveal their names as of now.
However, it will become public by the end of November, he said.
Even though NPP is an alliance partner of the BJP led government, the party will play major role in forming the next government, he said.
Regarding the question of continuing post poll alliance with BJP, Joykumar refused to give a definitive comment but said that the party will decide on the matter after seeing the election results but it has not closed the option.
M:A L Jayantakumar said that the day is a very important day for NPP with huge number of voters from a single constituency joining the party.
It shows the growing popularity of NPP despite having only four MLAs as a result of the party's works, stand and ideologies for the state and northeast region as well, he added.
