Imphal, October 12 2021:
A team of Protection and Preservation Committee Manipur (PPCM), an apex body of 27 CSOs, visited Makuilong and Marak Khullen villages recently to assess the conditions of the two interior villages in Senapati district, and interacted with the local residents to understand their situations and grievances.
During the meeting, the locals said their primary concern is lack of good road and health infrastructure among others even as the team members found that there was no health centre in Makuilong village which is located in Tadubi constituency about 11 km from Senapati Bazar.
The government school in the village was also found to be lacking in number of teachers and infrastructure.
At the same time, grievances of Maram Khullen villagers included absence of safe drinking water and healthcare facilities among other issues common in interior hill areas.
According to PPCM convener (finance) Laishram Thoithoi, the 16.15 km long Okalang to Makuilong road was renovated under PMGSY but the black topping work had stopped after completing 12 km only.
The blacktopping work also lacks quality control.
The project has 27 culvert components but only 11 were found constructed, he said while drawing attention of the government to look into the matter.
Makuilong village chairman Disuraibou said that the village is located at a distance of around 20 km from Senapati district headquarters and the villagers face hardships in times of medical emergency in the absence of healthcare facilities.
The government junior high school does not have adequate number of teachers due to which they are hiring private teachers to guide the students.
The village is divided into four parts.
In the absence of healthcare facilities, the residents are facing serious hardships and they have to go to Yangkhullen and Senapati along a bad road to avail medical services.
There were instances of pregnant woman dying due to absence of healthcare facilities and good roads, he recounted and said that the government was urged to set up a PHC in the village but to no avail till date.
According to Maram Khullen village chief K Namba, major issues that affect the villagers are safe drinking water and healthcare facilities.
During Covid-19, the villagers did not receive PMGKAY rice regularly.
They are also not getting benefits of different government schemes, he said while urging the government to improve basic infrastructure in the village.
