Imphal, April 30 2022:
While the handloom sector has been playing a major role in the socio-economic development of the state, flooding of the local market with clothes similar to local handloom products but made in power-loom is posing serious threat to the survival of local weavers, said six student bodies.
In a joint statement, AMSU, AIMS, DESAM, KSA, MSF and SUK expressed concern that mass production of clothes on machines imitating the unique design of the local handloom products will discourage the weavers of the state.
As such, the department concerned should look into the matter and prevent such mass production of clothes.
Unless timely intervention is made by the government, the situation has the potential of derailing the socio-economic condition of the state and push the society into further poverty, the joint statement said while drawing attention of the government for getting GI tags for all local handloom products.
The student bodies also urged the government as well as private educational institutes to use local handloom products as their uniforms as a way of promoting local products and weavers.
