Five years RI for convict in POCSO case

Imphal, April 30 2022:
In a POSCO case, Fast Track Special Court No 1 has sentenced a 55-year-old man to rigorous imprisonment for five years for his crime of sexually assaulting a six-year old girl.
The court of special judge (POCSO) S Imocha on Friday convicted the accused Mayengbam Sonamani (55), son of late M Pishak of Haorang Khunou, who used to serve as watchman cum part-time teacher at Maklang Junior High School, on the charge of outraging modesty of the girl in September 2018.The sentence hearing was conducted on Saturday and the court sentenced him to 5 years RI along with a fine of Rs 10,000 .
The judgment said that the convict had spent three years, five months and nine days in jail during his trial and the period will be commuted from his total sentence period.
In case, the convict fails to pay the fine of Rs 10,000, he will have to stay another month in jail.
The court further directed the state government to pay Rs 1 lakh to the victim from the government's fund under relevant scheme within 30 days of the order.
Mention may be made here that Women Police Imphal West registered a case and arrested the accused on September 14, 2018.During medico-legal examination, it was confirmed that the accused had committed sexual offence against the minor girl and accordingly police framed charge against him.
