JAC blocks highway over controversial death

A large number of people today blocked Imphal-Moreh highway at Papal Lamkhai against the controversial death of Tekcham Joyshankar alias Thamboujao of Papal.
Joyshankar was reportedly taken away from his home by two staff of Th Biren Singh Rehabilitation Centre located at Shamusang Shantipur, Pangal Siphai, Wangoi subdivision, Imphal West district on April 24 on the pretext of giving medical treatment.
But Joyshankar was reportedly found dead beside RIMS Casualty Ward on April 27 .
The JAC formed in connection with the mysterious death and the bereaved family have been urging the Government to establish the facts and circumstances leading to the death of Tekcham Joyshankar.
On account of the bandh, vehicles coming from Imphal, Kakching and Moreh were stranded for about one hour.

One woman who took part in blocking the highway said that Joyshankar was living with only his mother and he was not taking any intoxicating substance except alcohol occasionally.
He did not leave home on his own accord but was taken away by two staff of the rehabilitation on the pretext of giving medical treatment.
But Joyshankar's family was asked to come to RIMS as he was not feeling well.
When family members and relatives reached RIMS, Joyshankar was found dead, the woman said.
She maintained that the Government should investigate the case thoroughly and award exemplary punishment to all those found guilty.
On hearing about the highway bandh, SDPO Thoubal and the OC of Khongjom police station arrived at the scene and tried to pacify the protesters.
Some representatives of the JAC held a meeting with Thoubal SP Jogeschandra Haobijam in the latter's office where the SP assured that he would do everything in consultation with authorities concerned to pull up all suspects at the earliest.
Later, the JAC submitted a memorandum to the Chief Minister through the local MLA urging for immediate closure of Th Biren Rehabilitation Centre, verification of all such unauthorised rehabilitation centres, punishment of all the culprits involved in the suspicious death of Joyshankar and payment of ex-gratia to the mother of Joyshankar.
The memorandum mentioned that the JAC would launch different modes of intense agitation with the help of several CSOs if their demands are not fulfilled by May 2 .
