Imphal, April 30 2022:
While emphasizing the need to build economic Nationalism to sustain the future of every Manipur, at least six organisations have urged all stakeholders to stop bringing in machine made traditional clothes of Manipur such as khudei (loincloth wear, worn by menfolk), phanek (loincloth worn by women) and others from outside so as to promote the weavers of Manipur.
A press release jointly issued by All Manipur Students' Union (AMSU), Apunba Ireipakki Maheiroi Singpanglup (AIMS), Democratic Students' Alliance of Manipur (DESAM), Kangleipak Students' Association (KSA), Manipuri Students Federation (MSF) and Students Union of Kangleipak (SUK) also urged the people of Manipur to use the traditional clothes of Manipur in Government and private offices and also as school uniform to preserve Manipuri costumes.
Claiming that most women wear sarees as a uniform in various training centres, the student organisations urged the womenfolk to play a key role in preserving the rich culture and tradition of Manipur.
Saying that promoting the traditional clothes will go a long way in improving the socio-economic conditions of Manipur, the joint statement urged all concerned to stay away from activities which can discourage the weavers of Manipur.
Large scale sale of machine made traditional clothes from outside, if not checked on time, will have a devastating effect on the economy of Manipur, the organisations opined and added that expediting the process of granting patent and GI tag to the traditional clothes will also be helpful in improving the economy of Manipur.
