Imphal, April 30 2022:
The All India Trade Union Congress-Manipur State Council (AITUC-MSC) has submitted a memorandum to MAHUD Minister to constitute a Town Vending Committee and address the grievances and suffering of street vendors in Manipur.
A press release issued by AITUC State secretary L Sotinkumar also urged the Minister concerned to frame a scheme under the Street Vendors (Protection of Livelihood and Regulation of Street Vending) Act, 2014; identify the street vendors and issue a license or identity card and identify the non vending and vending areas.
Sotinkumar said that the street vendors operating in and around Imphal areas belong to the poorest and downtrodden section of society.
Saying that they are compelled to run street vending activities in and around Khwairamband areas as they hardly have any external support, Sotinkumar continued that street vending, over the years, has been an important source of employment for a large number of urban poor as it involves low skill and small financial capital.
Sotinkumar opined that lack of gainful, better paid, secured employment in the formal sector, lack of good market system in hill districts and rural areas and low economic conditions are some of the factors which led to the growth of street vending.
He also claimed that law enforcing agencies have been collecting illegal taxes, tips from street vendors.
