Second day of MANITEX : Traditional clothes in office once a week idea mooted

The second day of Manipur International Textile Expo (MANITEX) underway at Urban Haat, Nilakuthi was dedicated to Imphal West and Kangpokpi districts and named Imphal West and Kangpokpi Day.
Today's programme was attended by Health and Family Welfare Minister Dr Sapam Ranjan Singh, Deputy Chairman of State Planning Commission Sorokhaibam Rajen, Chairperson of Manipur State Women;s Development Corporation Soraisam Kebi and MLAs Khuraijam Loken, Kimneo Haokip Hangshing and Kangpokpi DC Kengoo Zuringla as presidium members.
Speaking at the event, Dr Ranjan said that the popularity of the State's handloom and handicraft items is growing outside Manipur.
Saying that there are altogether 249 handloom and handicraft items which are admired by non locals, he urged the artisans and weavers of the State to maintain quality while producing these items so as to increase their popularity.
The Minister also said the market of local handloom and handicraft items will expand if the artisans and weavers give more commitment to their works.
Dr Ranjan further expressed his desire for the Government's employees to wear traditional clothes at least once a week to office.
Saying that the handloom and handicraft items of Manipur are also being sold at e-commerce platforms, he urged the weavers and artisans to assess the items of their products before putting it up for sale as it is closely related with the culture of Manipur and tourism sector.
"The value of our handloom and handicraft items will lessen if the quality is compromised," he said.
The Minister also urged the officials concerned to make the Facebook and Instagram pages of MANITEX more attractive and promote the State's handloom and handicraft items.
Dr Ranjan also distributed financial assistance to select weavers under the National Handloom Development Programme.
In the evening, a fashion show and cultural events were held.
