ITCS confers honorary doctorate to IK Muivah

Theological College and Seminary conferred honorary doctorate degree for Lifetime Achievement in Humanitarian Service and Social Work to Inspector General of Police, IK Muivah, IPS at the graduation ceremony administered by its president Rev Dr Wilson Telen today in Imphal.
Dr IK Muivah is well known for undertaking prison reforms in the State when he was posted as the Superintendent of Police, for both Manipur Central Jail, Sajiwa and Manipur Central Jail, Imphal from 2011 to 2013 .
Taking a step further in discharge of his duties, Dr IK Muivah took up various positive initiatives such as correctional and welfare measures for the prisoners, which included large numbers of militants.
The measures were undertaken for improving the prison environment as well as reforming the prisoners' mindset and character.
The welfare measures were warmly reciprocated by the inmates and had long-lasting results which could be seen even today.

Among some of them was the introduction of the Indira Gandhi National Open University inside the prisons which provides free education for the prisoners even after they are released.
Besides improving the quality of food served to the prisoners, he curbed smuggling of illegal items inside the prisons.
Then SP, IK Muivah made the jail security personnel also frisked him without exception.
The First Prison Gym in India was also opened in Manipur Central Jail, Sajiwa with CNN-IBN award winner RK Viswajit of Animal Gym donating the equipment.
Music, painting, handicrafts and tailoring classes, and spiritual counselling were introduced besides sports, farming and gardening for the inmates.
With the assistance of Jawaharlal Nehru Institute of Medical Sciences (JNIMS) Hospital, special medical treatment and medicine were arranged for HIV inmates.
The prison library was refurnished and more than eighty 45-days modules of Art of Living Yoga courses were conducted for improving the health and well-being of the inmates.
Notably, the reforms undertaken inside the prisons were documented in a 2013 film "Anouba Khongthang" (New Step) .
Further, when was Commanding Officer of the 8th Bn, Manipur Rifles, a new school for the children of MR personnel was constructed inside the Battalion in Chandel district.
Dr IK Muivah did his graduation and post-graduation from St Stephen's College, Delhi University.
He was a member of the college's Social Service Society (SSS) which involves reading to blind students.
He also served as the college's chess captain and was a prize winner of the prestigious Delhi University Mukarji Memorial Debate in 1991 .
Dr IK Muivah had undergone training with the United Nations at Centre of Excellence for Special Police Units (CoESPU) in Vicenza, Italy in 2006.He also took part in the Mid-Career Training Programmes (MCTPs) in Sydney, Australia and Cambridge University, UK.
He was awarded the Police Medal for Meritorious Service in 2018 by the President of India.
Dr IK Muivah began his social service work at the young age of 15 when he served as chairman of Tangkhul Baptist Youth Fellowship, New Checkon in 1985.He is currently Advisor-II of Manipur Police Christian Churches Association.
He cleared UPSC Civil Services Examinations in 2000 securing 199th rank and he was allotted IPS, Manipur-Tripura cadre.
He was also elected as Chairman of Officers' Club, Lal Bahadur Shastri National Academy of Administration, Mussoorie in 2000 during the combined Foundation Course for IAS, IFS, IPS, IFoS and Group A Services.
Previous recipients of the honorary doctorate from the Seminary include former Chief Minister Dr Rishang Keishing, MLA Dr Chaltonlein Amo and former MBC general secretary Dr Vumthang Sitlhou.
