Minister exhorts Govt employees to use handloom products

Health minister Dr Sapam Ranjan said that government employees using handloom products at least once a week could help develop the sector.
Attending as chief guest of the Imphal West and Kangpoki Day, on the second day of the ongoing Manipur International Textile Expo (MANITEX) held at Urban Haat, Nilakuthi, Imphal East on Sunday, Dr Ranjan said that as handloom and handicraft products of the state are gaining popularity in other parts of the globe, people of the state need to strive for further enhancement of the products' profile and keep the tradition alive.
The minister also stressed the need for increasing presence of MANITEX on social media while underscoring the power of social media.
A total of 249 handloom and handicraft products of the state are available on Amazon and they are in high demand.
Among them, handbags made of water reed (Kauna) are popular as people in other states are using them in place of leather bags, he pointed out .
The minister also spoke on the importance of improving the quality of the products and added that they could also help in improving the tourism sector of the state.
Handloom and Textiles director Lamlee Kamei said that the expo has been organised with the objective to keep alive the tradition of local handloom and handicraft.
All the stalls are made with local products, the director said while urging the people to visit the expo.
Lamsang MLA S Rajen presided over the function while Wangoi MLA Kh Loken, Saikul MLA Kimneo Haokip, Manipur State Women's Development Corporation chairperson MLA S Kebi and DC Kangpokpi Kengoo Zuringla attended as guests of honour.
