Imphal, November 06 2022:
Coalition Against Drugs & Alcohol (CADA) and other women organisations on Sunday continued their protest against the state government's decision to legalise production and sale of liquor in the state.
In a release, CADA information & publicity secretary Khundongbam Anand conveyed that a sit-in protest was jointly organised by All Manipur Women Social Reformation & Development Samaj (Nupi Samaj), United Voluntary Women Association (UVWA) and CADA, Imphal East District Committee at Yumnam Patlou market shed on Sunday.
Addressing the protesters, UVWA president Nandeibam Sanatombi stated that the government must revoke its decision to legalise liquor as they have been fighting against the ills of alcohol since ages.
It will extend its full support to CADA in its democratic protest against the govern ment's decision to legalise liquor, she said.
The release also mentioned that Nupi Samaj, Naharup Mayai Leikai Women Welfare Association, Naharup Awang Leikai Women Welfare Association, Pangong Makhong Women Welfare Association, Makhapat Women Welfare Association, Wakha Women Welfare Association and CADA jointly staged a sit-in protest at Naharup Seva Marup community hall, denouncing the decision of the government to legalise liquor in the state.
Speaking at the protest, Naharup Mayai Leikai Women Welfare Association secretary Heisnam Indira asserted that the government's reasoning that it is legalising liquor to ensure availability of quality liquor and save lives is ridiculous.
The government's move is nothing but an action to encourage people involved in liquor business, she contended.
Demanding revocation of the government's decision to legalise sale and production of liquor in the state, CADA Jiribam district committee also staged a sit-in-protest at Chingdong Leikai, here, on Sunday.
During the protest, CADA Jiribam district committee activists held several placards inscribed with slogans denouncing the government's decision and demanding immediate revocation of the state cabinet decision to legalise liquor.
