MU celebrates Myanmar New Year Day

Centre for Myanmar Studies, Manipur University celebrated New Year Day of Myanmar, also known as Thingyan (Water Festival), on Monday at the Centenary Hall of the varsity.
Manipur University vice chancellor professor Naorem Lokendra Singh, MU dean of students' welfare Dr Laimayum Bishwanath Sharma and social and cultural activist Thokchom Thoiba were chief guest, president and guest of honour respectively of the event.
In his address, professor Lokendra said that a comparative research work is essential to understand the similarity in the culture of people of Myanmar/Burma and North East India particularly Manipur through folklore, ancient texts and materials.
He also said that the ministry of external affairs had been approached to provide special assistance to students learning Myanmar studies at Manipur University as these students are not only learning Myanmarese language but are also studying the socio-economy of the country.
According to professor N Lokendra, Manipur University has been celebrating Thingyan Festival (Water Festival) every year on the first day of the festival with active participation by students pursuing Myanmar Studies as well as dean, director and other officials.
The event was marked by presentation of Myanmarese dances and dishes and an art exhibition.
