Seminar dissects tourism in NE

A two-day national seminar on the topic 'Sustainable Tourism in North East India' which is being organised jointly by NG College's Political Science Department and Alternative Discourse, Manipur has begun at the college from Monday.
Speaking at the inaugural function, Manipur University Vice Chancellor Prof N Lokendra Singh stressed on the need for alternative tourism that is not based on mega modern infrastructure but on a sensitive process of tourism that is regional and community friendly.
He highlighted the need for eco-friendly tourism as an essential aspect of economy for which people need to prepare themselves to deal with tourists and visitors.
As people in the region in general and Manipur in particular are protective of their self and identity, there is the need for understanding the significance of tourism without compromising region's diversity and distinctiveness, he maintained.
The vice chancellor cited the example of Southeast Asian countries which are adopting region and context specific tourism roadmap.
State Department of Tourism Waikhom Ibohal also spoke on the prospects and challenges of tourism in Manipur.
He pointed out how the government is committed to eco-friendly tourism for upholding the aspects of conservation of natural biodiversity.
The government has adopted a system of ecology friendly infrastructure in sensitive areas like Shirui, location of ancient caves and Loktak Lake, etc.
The inaugural function was also attended by NG College principal Ashok RC and Delhi University associate professor Dr Bharti Chhibber, among others.
