Source: The Sangai Express
Imphal, June 12 2022:
Baya weaver which was once quite common all across the State including the valley areas has become an endangered species as it can only be spotted rarely in Jiribam since the last 60 years or so.
Incidentally, The Sangai Express came across some hanging nests of the weaverbird in Dibong areas of Jiribam district.
A resident of Dibong Chungkham Ramakanta said that he used to see many nests of Baya weaver hanging from betel plants during his childhood but the same bird species is hardly seen these days.

Talking about the bird, one scientist of Bombay Natural History Society said that the Baya weaver sighted in Jiribam district is ploceus philippinus burmanicus and the same species can also be found in Bhutan, North East India and Bangladesh.
Environmentalist Dr Kh Shamungou maintained that the particular weaverbird species was seen extensively in the valley areas of Manipur about six decades back.
