Govt invokes Act to ban cease strike by HC workers

The state government has ordered that any form of agitation including participation in the 'cease work' strike which disrupts or dislocates the functioning of the Government Health Services is prohibited with immediate effect under the Manipur Essential Services Maintenance Act, 1984.In an order issued Wednesday, special secretary (Home) H Gyan Prakash stated that the decision was taken in response to the 'cease work' strike called by Manipur Government Services Federation, etc, in which some staff of Health Department including nurses appeared to have joined.
Any form of agitation which disrupts the 'Essential Services' as outlined in the Manipur Essential Services Maintenance Act, 1984 will have serious adverse impact in the maintenance of public health especially during Covid-19 pandemic and would seriously endanger the life ofthe public.
The government deems it necessary to prohibit any agitation or participation by staff of Health Department in public interest, it said.
The order made it clear that no person employed in any essential service to which the order relates to can go or remain on strike; any strike declared or commenced, whether before or after the issue of this order, by persons employed in any such service will be illegal.
The order will remain in force for a period of six months from the date of issue of the order, it added.
