Sit-in-protests demand initiation of NRC process

Imphal, September 13 2026: A twin sit-in protests staged today at Singjamei Makha Naorem Leikai and Kwakeithel Thounaojam Leikai urged the State Government and the Centre to initiate due process of updating the National Register of Citizens (NRC) with 1951 as the base year.

The two sit-in protests were staged under the aegis of AMUCO, AMAWOVA, PLMPAM, COHR and MSF .

The protesters urged the State Government to exert pressure on the Government of India to update the NRC with 1951 as the base year at the earliest.

They categorically stated that Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls which concluded recently should be annulled.

They also demanded resettlement of all IDPs at the earliest and repeal of Armed Forces Special Powers Act (AFSPA) from all over Manipur.

Speaking to media persons at Kwakeithel Thounaojam Leikai, AMUCO president S Sanjoy said that the twin protests staged today at Naorem Leikai and Kwakeithel Thounaojam Leikai are precursors of more intense agitation which would follow.

He said that the State Government must exert maximum pressure on the Government of India to see that the NRC is updated at the earliest with 1951 as the base year.

He also demanded annulment of SIR 2026 and resettlement of all IDPs at the earliest.

In addition to updation of NRC with 1951 as the base year, annulment of SIR 2026 and resettlement of all IDPs, the other agendas of the five CSOs are protection of Manipur from all inimical forces, putting an end to the people's suffering and complete repeal of AFSPA from all over Manipur, the AMUCO president said.

The sit-in-protest at Naorem Leikai was jointly organised by the Singjamei to Lilong United Clubs' Organisation (SLUCO) and Singjamei to Lilong Meira Paibi Apunba Lup (SLIPAL).

It was participated by Meira Paibis and local club volunteers of Naorem Leikai, Sofa Leirak, Kha Naorem Leikai and Liwa Lambi.

The sit-in-protest staged at Kwakeithel Thounaojam Leikai was jointly organised by the Progressive Youth Development Association (PYDA) and Kwakeithel Apunba Meira Paibi Lup.
