CM commits to development of sports infrastructure

Chief minister N Biren Singh on Wednesday stated that the government has been putting in best possible efforts to develop infrastructure in the field of games and sports in the state despite its limited resources.
Speaking while attending the reception ceremony of Judo Olympian Likmabam Sushila Chanu held at Heingang Marjing Lai Haraop nam in Imphal East district on Wednesday, N Biren announced that Sushila Chanu will be promoted to inspector instead ofthe earlier announcement for promoting her to sub-inspector rank.
The chief minister further stated that the government has come up with a policy to give priority to those disciplines in which players from the state could excel at international level.
He also informed that a grand reception of all the five Olympians of the state who participated at the Tokyo Olympics 2020 would be held on August 21 wherein cash rewards and job appointment orders would be handed over to them in honour of their achievements.
Stating that a society with people of good character, manners and mutual respect is must for taking the state to the path of progress, CM Biren said that it is through the youth's participation in games and sports that they can imbibe such values.
Expressing optimism that more athletes from the state would qualify for the Paris Olympics 2024, the CM also encouraged Sushila to continue putting extra efforts in her training so that she could bag gold medal in the next Olympic Games.
Regarding the decision of the state government to reward Rs 1 crore to Tokyo Olympics gold medallist Neeraj Chopra, Biren said that Manipur being called as the powerhouse of sports in India should also respect and honour the achievements of players from other states to show that the Manipur is always at the forefront when it comes to games and sports.
Wishing that more sportspersons from the state become Olympians and win medals, L Sushila stated that she will thrive to get a medal in the next Olympics.
She also said that although she could not get a medal at the Tokyo Olympics, she is very grateful to all who have supported and encouraged her.
Former minister W Jagor Singh, youth affairs and sports director T Phulen, tourism director W Ibohal, minor irrigation chief engineer H Brajendra and elected representatives of local bodies also attended the programme among others.
Earlier, L Sushila was accorded a warm welcome at Imphal International Airport by her family members, people from her locality and numerous sport lovers.
