Man held with gold worth Rs 3.81 cr

Imphal, February 08 2023:
The Anti-Smuggling Unit of Customs Division, Imphal arrested a man with Rs 3.81 crore worth of gold.
The arrested person has been identified as Md Umar Farauqe (32) s/o Nure of Porompat Muslim Road No 2 .
According to a press communique issued by Customs Division deputy commissioner Keerthishri S on Wednesday, a reliable input was received on February 6 around 9pm regarding the transport of gold biscuits, hidden inside a white colour Bolero Pick-Up Truck (MN 06LA 9593) .
It was further informed that the vehicle would arrive at Thamnapokpi in Chandel district on the intervening night of February 6 and 7, possibly before 2 am.
Based on this input, officers of Anti-Smuggling Unit of Customs Division Imphal rushed to the location and intercepted the vehicle around 2 am on February 7.The vehicle along with the driver Md Umar Farauqe was then brought to the Customs Office at Sangakpam for checking during which around 40 gold biscuits weighing a total of 6640 gm was recovered from the inside of the vehicle at about 4.30 am.
The gold biscuits are estimated to be worth around Rs 1.81 crore.
Later, Md Umar Farauqe was formally arrested and gold biscuits confiscated under Section 104 of Customs Act, 1962, it conveyed.
