While securiy forces destroyed around 65 acres of poppy, two village chiefs, dubbed 'habitual offenders' by the police have been arrested for alleged poppy cultivation in Kamjong district today.
The two have been identified as Thangkai Haokip, chief of Maokot village and Mangneikam Haokip, chief of Lanchah village.
They were produced before the Judicial Magistrate and remanded to police custody, said the police.
Notably, security forces including personnel of Kam-jong police, 8 Assam Rifles, Manipur Rifles, MPTC, NAB and Kamjong Forest Division carried out the poppy destruction drives at Maokot and Lanchah village.

The security personnel destroyed 50 acres of poppy plantations at Maokot village hill range and 15 acres at Lanchah hill range.
The poppy plantations at Lanchah village were found in a remote location different from the site destroyed in previous year, said police.
The drives were conducted as part of the War on Drugs 2.0 by Kamjong police.
The village chiefs of Maokot and Lanchah village who are "habitual offenders of poppy plantations" were arrested and are presently in custody, said police.
The combined team of about 115 personnel was stationed at Chatric village since yesterday.
The district police is indebted to the village authorities of Chatric for providing accommodation and cooperation to the large combined team carrying out poppy destruction, said the police.
