Imphal, February 08 2023:
Angry residents of Langjing Achouba, who are settling along the sides of Imphal- Jiribam section of the national highway-37, blocked the road stretch on Wednesday to prevent traffic movement in protest against inordinate delay in completing construction of culverts in the area, on Wednesday.
The road blockade, however, came to a halt following assurance given by the local MLA that the agency concerned would be informed to complete construction of the culverts within 5 days failing which the work will be assigned to another agency with immediate effect.
Following the agitation, vehicular movement along the stretch came to a standstill and created problems to passers-by.
Langjing Achouba Maning Leikai Meira Paibi Lup member Khangjrak-pam Bilashini said that though the agitation has been called off after Patsoi MLA S Kunjakeshwor intervened, the agitation would be resumed with increased intensification if the construction work on the 2 culverts is not completed by February 15, 2023 .
She pointed out that construction of the culverts started some 5/6 months back.
For the purpose, a large portion of earth was dug up in the middle of the road stretching over half the total breadth of the highway thereby creating problems to commuters.
MLA S Kunjakeshwor, while maintaining that the protest demonstration of the public was justified, informed that the road stretch from Oriental College to Langjing hill is being taken up by Awantika Construction Company as sub-contract under NHIDCL.
The government has also provided the re -quired area for the road construction to the company but the work has not been completed, which is very unfortunate.
The contract work will be terminated if the repair/construction work of the road is not initiated within 5 days by the company, he made it clear.
