Imphal, February 10 2014:
A three day workshop on crime against women held at Youth Hostel, Khuman Lampak under the aegis of the All Manipur Women's Voluntary Association (AMAWOVA) concluded today.
AMAWOVA president Y Kunjarani and Moirang College Assistant Professor Arambam Noni attended the closing session as president and special invitee respectively.
Speaking on the topic 'Crime Against Women in Manipur and its measures' Arambam Noni expressed strong reservation whether the existing laws can effectively control crime against women.
Laws may reduce violence and crime but it is doubtful that laws alone can check violence and crime.
The disturbing trend of crime against women being witnessed in the State need serious analysis from outside the perspective of law.
The issue demands serious and comprehensive study together with the changing political-economy and over-arching influence of capitalism across the world, Noni asserted.
Y Kunjarani questioned who would protect the weaker sex when the so called protectors have failed miserably in discharging their primary duty.
Development and progress can be realised only when both men and women are placed on equal footing.
It is highly questionable if only men should be blamed for all the crimes and violence against women, Kunjarani said.
