Barak bridge

Imphal, February 10 2014:
With most of the wooden planks laid on Barak bridge along Imphal-Jiribam broken down, the bridge is posing serious threats to transporters, particularly loaded trucks.
On account of its shaky condition, vehicles are now crossing the bridge with utmost caution at a minimal speed, said some drivers operating on the route.
The condition of Barak bridge deteriorated to such a sorry state as the bridge was not repaired and the wooden planks not replaced for a long time.
Missing runners (wooden planks) have further aggravated the bridge's pathetic condition.
With some of the hanging clamps already snapped, loaded trucks travelling from Jiribam to Imphal may experience disastrous casualties any time, said the drivers.

Notably, it was TDC that repaired Makru bridge with substantial Government assistance recently.
Before the bridge was repaired only 35 to 40 loaded trucks could cross the bridge but now 70 to 80 trucks cross the bridge in a day.
In case the worn out and missing wooden planks are not replaced in the next couple of days, no transporters would like to take the risk crossing the same bridge and this may ultimately compel all heavy vehicles to stay away from the highway.
Urging the State Government to repair the highway at the earliest, the transporters conveyed their strong desire for the Government to issue strict instruction to the BRO to replace the hanging clamps with new clamps of good quality.
They also sought immediate attention of the State Government so that BRO is instructed to repair Rengpang-Sibilong- Mongsang-Nungba-Kambiron section of the highway before monsoon season sets in.
