Pena, Khongjom Parba to be introduced in college

Director of Manipur Art & Culture Dr K Sobita today said the Government department was set to introduce the Pena (an ancient musical instrument) and Khongjom Parba (ballad song) courses at the Government Music College, Imphal from the next session.
She informed this at the closing function of a week-long 'festival on folk songs of Manipur' organised by the Sargam-cum-Performing Musical Institute, Imphal here at Lamyanba Pakhang Shanglen in Palace Compound.
At the occasion, Dr Sobita said the Government is set to take in the Pena and Khongjom Parba classes at the Government Music College, Imphal from its next session.
Saying it is the paramount importance that "we look after our folk songs," she cautioned that many of them are now dying out.
Dr Sobita said the finest way to preserve the folk songs of the state is through video recordings that will of course enable the future generations to inherit them.
She also said the cassettes will certainly accelerate learning process and it can be a simple and easy method for students in their learning.
B Netachandra Sharma, president Sargam band and Dr Hamom Naba were also present at the function.
