Club members arrested, locals demand release

Bishnupur police reportedly arrested four functionaries of Kwasiphai Youth Volunteers' Organisation (KYVO) after the quartet reportedly asked BJP workers to uphold the earlier resolution of the club not to conduct election campaign meetings in the village.
Meanwhile, local Meira Paibi Lup and club members organised a sit-in protest at Kwasiphai in Bishnupur district on Friday decrying the arrest and demanding unconditional release of the arrested club members.
Locals told The People's Chronicle that the local club and Meira Paibi Apunba Lup of the village had earlier ad opted a resolution to prohibit any sort of election campaign meeting, organising feast, and distribution of cash for votes in the village in order to avoid unwanted incidents.
Following a poll campaign meeting of BJP held in the village on Thursday, club and Meira Paibi members talk ed with some BJP workers around 9 pm, asking them to uphold the resolution ad opted by the villagers.
Surprisingly, police came to the village around 11.30 pm and arrested four members the club including its president and secretary.
Decrying the arrest and demanding unconditional release of the arrested club members, local people of Kwasiphai took out a protest march up to Tiddim Road, where they staged a sit in protest.
Speaking to the media, Meira Paibi and club members recounted that the BJP workers led by works minister Govindas Konthoujam organised a poll cam paign meeting in defiance of the earlier resolution, on Thursday evening.
Though nobody interrupted the meeting, the club and Meira Paibi members met with some BJP workers after the meeting was over reminding them about the resolution.
The protestors strongly condemned arrest of the club members while terming it as an act of abusing power by BJP.
One of the club members told media persons that the arrested functionaries were charged of threatening the minister using a gun, which is both false and malicious as the minister is well -guarded by his security escorts.
The local people want to know what the security escorts of the minister was doing if the charge levelled against the club members was true and if the incident really occurred.
Dismissing the charge as baseless, the club member demanded the minister to stop misusing power and levelling false charges against the common people.
