Bust of VC awardee Major Joydutta unveiled

The courageous and selfless actions of late Major Ngangom Joydutta Singh, recipient of the Vir Chakra (Posthumous), were commemorated and honoured by his alma mater, Sainik School.
Coalpara, Assam, where his bust was unveiled earlier this month.
Major Ngangom Joydutta, who attended Sainik School, Goalpara from class V and passed his higher secondary exam from the same institute, was remembered for his valour and dedication.
On April 7, under the initiative of the school authority and Sainik School Goalpara Old Boys' Association, his wife, Captain (Retd) Ngangom Subadani Devi, unveiled the bust at the library block of the school.
The ceremony was attended by the principal, faculty, family members, and alumni of the school, who paid floral tributes to the martyr, honouring his legacy of bravery and sacrifice.
After completing his training at National Defence Academy, Khadakwasla, Ngangom Joydutta was commissioned into the Gorkha Regiment in 1977 and in October 1987 deployed as part of the Indian Peace Keeping Force (IPKF) in Sri Lanka, where he displayed exemplary leadership and courage under fire from militants.
Leading his company, he engaged in hand-to-hand combat with the enemy, sacrificing his life in the process.
Hailing from Thangmeiband DM College Gate, Maisnam Leikai, Imphal West, Major Ngangom Joydutta was the first recipient of the Vir Chakra from Manipur.
He is survived by his wife and two children, both of whom have also served in the military.
