Workshop held to revive traditional trumpet skills

In a bid to revive and preserve the traditional art of playing Pengkhol (traditional trumpet), a 5-day workshop titled Pengkhol Idum Itam Na' was conducted at Ruwngchang village community hall from April 1 to 5 under the auspices of Anal Lenruwl Tangpi -General Headquarters (ALT-GHQ).
Singer and traditional trumpet expert KI Ruben Anal led the workshop as the main instructor, imparting his expertise to the participants.
Alongside teaching the techniques of playing the trumpet, he also provided insights into crafting the instrument, the various types of bamboo that could be utilised, and the rich traditional history associated with the traditional trumpet.
Participants from Chakpikarong area, who attended the workshop, expressed gratitude for the invaluable knowledge shared on traditional music as ALT Social and Culture W1 Jonah Ningtung Anal emphasised the significance of such initiatives in preserving fading cultural heritage.
"In these times of techno logical advancement, traditional music and instruments are at risk of fading away.
It is vital that we take steps to preserve them," stated Ningtung, who also underscored the importance of passing down the art of playing Pengkhol to the next generation, in view of the dwindling number of proficient players within the Anal community.
Ningtung highlighted the workshop's importance in ensuring the continuation of this traditional art form, emphasising the need to nurture and sustain cultural practices amidst modernisation.
He stressed that Pengkhol holds a special place within the community's heritage and must be safeguarded for posterity.
With just a few individuals proficient in playing Pengkhol, efforts to impart these skills to a wider audience are crucial for its preservation and propagation.
The workshop, through its comprehensive curriculum and expert guidance, aims to reignite interest and appreciation for the traditional trumpet among Anal youths, thereby securing its legacy for generations to come.
