Rich tributes paid to Maharaj Narasingh

The 174th death anniversary of Maharaj Narasingh was observed at Kangla Fort, here, on Friday in a solemn ceremony organised by the State Archaeology, Department of Art & Culture.
The event commenced with a performance of Shree Shree GovindaJiu Jalakeli Pala led by Maharajkumari Hemamanjuri (Sanatombi).
Attending the event as chief guest, Art and Culture commissioner M Joy emphasised the historical significance of the day, tracing back its observance since April 11, 1850 .
He lauded Maharaj Narasingh for his profound Contributions to Manipur during his six-year reign from 1844 to 1850 along with highlighting the ruler's pivotal initiatives, including the relocation of the Royal Palace from Canchipur to Kangla after ousting the Awas (Burmese) from Manipur with the then King Gambhir Singh, the initiation of construction for the two Kangla Shas, and the introduction of Mera Houchongba festival aimed at promoting national integration and bolstering the state's economy.
He also mentioned about the renaming of Khoiri Pat in Cachar into Leng-ondabi Pat.
Along with hailing Maharaj Narasingh as a selfless and benevolent ruler, and stressing the importance of honouring his sacrifices and ideals in contemporary times, the commissioner urged the youth and citizens to try to emulate Narasingh's patriotism and nationalism, while also expressing concern over the prevailing tension in the state, and called for unified effort for ensuring peace and progress.
Speaking as president of the event, art and culture director K Dinamani elaborated on the historical significance of the day and disclosed plans for a Light and Sound' project at Thangal General temple, Palace Compound, Imphal.
He expressed confidence that the project would serve as an educational tool for both youth and tourists, facilitating a deeper understanding of Manipur's rich history.
The solemn ceremony included performing of rituals such as offering of floral tributes at the Man-glen (final resting place of Maharaj Narasingh, presenting guard of honour, gun salute, reverse arms, sounding of the last post, observing two-minute silence, and paying obeisance to the Shree Shree Govinda Jiu Jalakeli Pala.
The event was also attended by MNMC secretary RK Priyokumar, and Environment & Climate Change director Dr T Brajakumar, alongside government officials and relatives of Maharaj Narasingh, who gathered to honour the memory of the revered ruler and commemorate his enduring legacy.
