JD-U leaders blame CM for unrest situation

Imphal, January 19 2024: Recalling a recent statement of chief minister N Biren, who said that he is not a person who would just sit back watching people die, Janata Dal United (JD-U) Manipur Pradesh vice-president ex-MLA Dr Kh Loken has questioned inaction of the chief minister over the evolving situation in the state.

Addressing a press meet at the party's Palace Gate office, here on Friday, Dr Loken said that the government has failed to protect public lives and properties.

Existence of political parties will become meaningless if the situation continues to persist and as such the CM should convene an all-political party meeting to pressurise the Centre for resolving the crisis at the earliest, he suggested.

The former MLA also lamented over the indifferent attitude of the Central government from using its resources in fighting the aggression like it did when faced with similar situation from terrorists from Pakistan.

He asked if the state police are not security forces of the country and also expressed suspicion of a hidden agenda at play by the Centre behind the evolving situation in Manipur.

Even the state police forces are facing exhaustion of ammunition and seeking additional procurement but the Kuki militants are using all kinds of war munitions freely, which raises a serious question on support or involvement of external forces.

The government has let the Kuki militants to freely violate the ground rules of Suspension of Operation (SoO) agreement, he said while criticising the security advisor and the chief minister for shifting responsibility to one another.

Joining the media briefing, JD-U spokesperson Dr Ni-maichand Luwang said that the state is in a critical situation and at least two security personnel and five civilians have been killed in the last four days.

The Kuki militants are targeting even farmers, who are left without any protection.

The chief minister seems to have lost his power and rights, and it would be better for him to resign in this situation, he said.

According to JD-U vice-president O Nabakishore, lives of common people, even in the heart of Imphal city are no longer secured in the state and the people are eager for answer on what the government or the chief minister is doing to end the crisis.

How many innocent people should make the sacrifice for the government to put an end to the crisis, he asked.
