Imphal, February 03 2024:
Art and Culture director Keithellakpam Dinamani has opined that most of the books written in Bengali script could be one of the reasons for students lacking interest in scouting libraries of Manipur University of Culture and Dance College inspite of the said institutions having stack full of books.
He made the observation at the inaugural function of a workshop on translation of Manipuri short stories into Kabui, Mao, Poumai and Tangkhul languages, organised by Writers' Forum Imphal under the aegis of Chief Ministergi Artistsing-gi Tengbang (CMTC) of Art and Culture Department, at the conference hall of Directorate of Trade, Commerce & Industries, here, on Saturday.
Director Dinamani continued that when an individual applies for CMTC, he/she is eligible for financial assistance of up to Rs 50,000.Organisations, which have been functioning for three to 25 years are also eligible to avail assistance up to Rs 1.5 lakh, while those over 25 years can receive up to Rs 2 lakh.
Regarding the workshop, he said that it could be considered as a sort of cultural exchange between one community and another community.
During translation, the translator must not only translate the work in accordance with his dialect but also rewrite the same in English to facilitate easy access to all.
He then pointed out that as students are taught in Meetei Mayek (script) today, they are unable to access the books stored at the libraries of Manipur University of Culture and Dance College since most of them are written in Bengali script.
As such, there is the need to translate the same, considering the fact that the young students have nowhere to take references from, he asserted.
Dinamani urged the Writers' Forum to extend their assistance in this regard, while assuring of funding all the required expenses.
