Imphal, February 03 2024:
Six student organisations have issued a joint statement strongly condemning educational institutions which are charging admission and tuition fees from internally displaced (ID) students currently residing in relief camps due to current crisis.
Manipuri Students' Federation (MSF), Democratic Students' Alliance of Manipur (DESAM), Kangleipak Students' Association (KSA), Students' Union of Kangleipak (SUK), Apunba Ireipakki Maheiroi Sinpanglup (AIMS), and another student body issued a joint statement expressing concern over the situation and called for a rhore compassionate approach towards those affected by the violence.
In the statement, the student bodies highlighted the inhumane nature of educational institutions insisting on payment of fees from students in relief camps.
They emphasised the need for empathy and understanding towards individuals facing displacement, particularly during times of crisis.
They also highlighted instances where students from relief camps faced exclusion during the admission process, including allegations against schools affiliated with the Catholic Education Society.
Some students were reportedly turned away, citing seat unavailability.
The student bodies strongly urged educational institutions to reserve seats, so as to ensure that students affected by crisis are not deprived of their fundamental right to education.
They also appealed to the state government for prompt review and support to students currently residing in relief camps, and swift intervention to ensure that the displaced students receive necessary assistance to facilitate smooth pursuit of their educational goals.
