Imphal, February 03 2024:
American Oncology Institute (AOI) Babina Specialty Hospital has successfully treated a 76-year-old woman suffering from Non-Hodgkin Lymphoma (NHL) using Intensity-Modulated Radiation Therapy (IMRT) technology.
In a statement, AOI Babina Specialty Hospital informed that the patient had been suffering from NHL, with a lymphoma in her palate area and experiencing problems in consuming foods for over two months.
She had already received chemotherapy for Waldenstrom macroglobu-linemia syndrome in 2017 .
The lymphoma in her oral cavity was diagnosed as Low grade B cell NHL through advance imaging and biopsy report and consequently provided IMRT treatment with Halcyon Machine.
IMRT, a special precision radiation therapy has low side effect as compared with common radiation treatment.
The best radiation treatment was given to the patient by conducting simulation CT imaging and contouring, and was able to provide symptomatic control, the statement said.
According to radiation oncologist consultant Dr Dhaneshor of the hospital, NHL in oral cavity including the palate can be treated with IMRT technology with minimal side effect.
The institute is providing free treatment facility to CMHT and PMJAY beneficiaries and also providing significant relief to cancer patients, who would otherwise visit other states to get the treatment.
The statement further informed that the lymphoma reduced significantly after 20 days of IMRT treatment and the patient was able to resume normal activities with minimal side effects.
After three months of completing the treatment, a PET scan showed complete cure of the lymphoma.
According to Dr Amit Dha wan of the hospital, IMRT technology has shown significant success rate in the hospital and they will continue to add new technologies and equipment for effective treatment of cancer.
The hospital will also soon start treatment of thyroid cancer through iodine therapy.
