Imphal, February 03 2024:
Six student bodies have urged schools to abstain from taking admission and monthly fees from students staying in relief camps.
The six student bodies include Manipuri Students' Federation (MSF), Democratic Students' Alliance of Manipur (DESAM), Kangleipak Students' Association (KSA), Students' Union of Kangleipak (SUK) and Apunba Imagi Machasing (AIMS) .
While many schools have been taking up efforts to provide free of cost education to students in relief camps, some schools have put pressure on the students and parents to pay admission and monthly fees, they said in a statement.
During the current conflict, hundreds of houses have been burnt and thousands of people have been displaced.
The people, who have been displaced and are staying at relief camps are without proper means of earning income.
Taking admission and monthly fees from students belonging to such families who have been displaced is against humanity, said the student bodies.
Urging the Government to provide assistance to the students in relief camps, the six student bodies further appealed to schools under the Catholic Educational Society to reserve some seats for displaced students.
Students in relief camps shouldn't be turned away and ignored when they approach the schools concerned for admission, they said.
