Youth power can bring positive change: MLA Muivah
Source: Chronicle News Service / R Lester Makang

Ukhrul, January 19 2024: Ukhrul MLA Ram Muivah has emphasised the power of youth and its role in bringing about positive changes in society.

"Youth possess the power to bring about significant changes through their energy, enthusiasm, and determination.

With the right mindset and energy, youth can be the driving force behind positive transformations in our society," the MLA said while speaking as chief guest at the inaugural ceremony of the Veikhang Katamnao Long (VKL)'s 20th general conference cum sports, literature and cultural meet 2024 at Nungshong Khunou village under Ukhrul A/C, here, on Friday.

Acknowledging that the strength of youth power is indescribable, he stated that it can empower the youth to influence over their own lives and circumstances in all spheres of life including political, social and economic situations.

Muivah then urged the youth of Veikhang area to explore their potentials in order to make a difference in the community.

The MLA also stressed the importance of education and urged the youth not to neglect their studies.

He reminded them that education is the key to success and a necessary foundation for any kind of development.

He highlighted the fact that the district has produced many prominent personalities and literate people, but added that it continues to face acute economic backwardness.

"This is our Achilles heel and I urge our youth to enhance their skills and competence, in order to improve the economic condition of our society," he said.

Muivah also noted that the district is facing challenges in terms of drug abuse among youth.

He, however, pointed out that the fault does not lie solely with the youth.

"Lack of proper opportunities for skill diversification and development is also a major contributing factor," he said, and called for more opportunities for the youth to develop their skills and contribute to the development of the district.

According to Muivah, back in the 1950s, footballers from Ukhrul district were known for their impressive performances at the CC Meet, earning them the title of champions.

"One notable footballer from Ukhrul district was Kazipmi Mawung, hailing from Hunphun village.

He was popularly known as the scoring machine.

Sadly, today, the younger generation seems to be falling behind in this sport," he rued.

He reminded the youth about the legacy left by these talented footballers and urged the younger generation to follow in their footsteps.

"Our youngsters should look up to players like Mawung, Aleng Shimrah and others and strive to emulate their dedication and passion for the sport so as to continue the proud tradition of our district's football dominance," he exhorted.

Attending as the guest of honour at the inaugural ceremony, T Rollee Vareshim, a retired senior Assistant Director of the Develop ment Commissioner (Handicrafts) at the Ministry of Textile, reflected on the impressive journey of the Veikhang Katamnao Long (VKL), a conglomeration of six neighbouring villages namely, Khangkhui Khullen, Khangkhui Khunou, Nungshong Khullen, Nungshong Khunou, Choithar, and Lungreiphung.

Founded in September 1983, the VKL started as a humble organisation with William Mashangva as its founder along four other pioneers, he said.
