Imphal, December 16 2023:
Stating that there is no dearth of talented people in Manipur and yet there is negligible progress in almost every sphere, Taragi Cheisu advisor and acclaimed theatre director Ratan Thiyam has stressed the need for finding out the root cause for the sluggishness in development.
Speaking at the second Weekly Invited Talk Programme of Taragi Cheisu organised as part of its economic revival programme at its Khurai Ahongei office, here, on Saturday, he reminded all concerned that almost all the essential items used in the state are being brought through the two national highways - Imphal-Dimapur and Imphal-Jiribam.
While the goods trucks are loaded with different products when entering the state, they carry nothing in their outbound trips.
This is an area which needs proper discussion to utilise these outbound trips, which will help in improving the state's economy, Ratan said.
He also called upon the farmers to adopt multiple cropping system rather that keep the paddy fields fallow for seven to eight months after harvest unlike in other states, where farmers grow different types of crops and vegetables throughout the year.
Farmers need to think over the matter while at the same time, the government should ensure proper irrigation facility to keep the fields green throughout the year, he suggested.
Taragi Cheisu needs to think what are its plans and policies, and whether the policies will be able to bring economic development in the state.
As of now, the vision of the organisation seems bright but needs to point out the shortcomings and challenges in the state.
On the other hand, people of the state may think that they are developed but the fact is most of the people lack even the most basic civic sense.
Everyone needs to have a strong sense of humanity in order to bring integrity, which will in turn bring socio-economic development, he contended.
Ratan Thiyam further said that the state has tourism potential and tourists from different parts of the world are visiting the state.
However, there is not a single travel agent or 5-star hotel.
Art, culture and sports are the only sectors that keep Manipur on the global map and there is a strong need to expand in other areas.
There is no dearth of talents in the state and they need a little push and support to fly high, he added.
Renowned filmmaker Aribam Syam Sharma and senior advocate Khaidem Mani attended the programme as chief guest and president respectively.
Veterinary and Animal Husbandry Services joint director (planning) Dr RK Khogendrajit spoke on Scientific rearing of livestock as livelihood and support by government schemes' as resource persons.
He also interacted with the participants.
