Imphal, December 16 2023:
The JAC formed in connection with the death of Shijagurumayum (Ongbi) Romita Devi has demanded the Government to conduct a fresh post mortem examination of the woman's body and launch an investigation into the suspicious death.
Addressing a press conference today at Manipur Press Club, JAC convenor Maibam Purnimashi said that Romita Devi was found hanging in a suspicious manner at the residence of her husband in Khongman Zone II on December 5, 2023 .
She continued that the post mortem of Romita Devi was done December 7 in the presence of her family members at JNIMS and the report was released on December 11 by the JNIMS Forensic Medicine Department.
Purnimsasi asserted that JAC cannot accept the post mortem report and would not claim Ronibala's body until the truth behind her suspicious death is established.
Sister-in-law of the deceased woman who identified herself as Langpoklakpam Jamuna Devi said that on December 5 evening, her sister-in-law called her to pick her up from Singjamei area in a very suspicious manner.
Jamuna said that she subsequently dialled the husband of Romita and asked him to pick up his wife from the Singjamei area where his wife (Romita) was staying.
She continued that she told both Romita and the husband to call her back after they meet to ensure the couple has no dispute.
Jamuna added that Romita's daughter picked up the phone when she dialled the husband after repeated attempts and responded that her mother was taken to JNIMS after she was found hanged.
"The doctors there claimed that Romita was brought dead at around 8 pm when we reached the hospital", she added.
Jamuna also claimed that at the time of the post mortem examination which was conducted in her presence, she saw blood at the nose, ears and ears of Romita's body.
"There was many signs of being struck repeatedly by a blunt object such as skull fracture, contusion and swelling", claimed Jamuna while expressing doubts about the legitimacy of the post mortem report which said that the cause of death was asphyxia and did not mention anything about the injuries to Romita's head.
Alleging a suspicious nexus between family of Romita's husband and doctors who carried out the post mortem, Jamuna urged the Government to conduct a fresh post mortem examination and expedite the investigation into the suspicious death of Romita.
Jamuna further appealed to all the women organisations, clubs and CSOs of the State to provide their support in finding the truth and delivering justice to Romita.
