Imphal, December 16 2023:
United Meetei Pangal Committee (UMPC), Manipur has clarified that the statement made by a person identified as leader of a Meetei Pangal organisation on the occasion of Nupi Lal observance was not related with Meetei Pangal community as a whole.
Speaking to media persons at Hatta Golapati, here, on Saturday, UMPC Manipur convenor Habibullah expressed that the statement of the person concerned on the occasion of Nupi Lal was the personal opinion of that person.
Meetei Pangal has been working at its level best in the present conflict to uphold the integrity of Manipur.
Despite staying at the frontline for the protection of the land, it is unfortunate that the person made such statements which could strain the relationship between the two communities, Habibullah said.
Moreover, he urged all concerned to stop attacking Meetei Pangal community, which has no involvement in the conflict, on social media platforms.
Co-convenor Haji Arafat Ali Tampak informed that 1007 Pangals came to Manipur to aid the war in 1606.As the then king was pleased with the Pangals, he gave Meetei women as wives and even provided surnames and thus the Meetei Pangals have been living in the state harmoniously for the last 500 years.
However, inference of the person, who identified himself as a leader of an organisation, that Meetei Pangals came to Manipur prior to 1606 was his personal opinion.
Such statements which could mislead the community amidst the current crisis is unfortunate, he denounced.
Meanwhile, spokesperson of the committee Raiz Ahmad Tampak stated that a public convention on the theme 'Past, present and future of Meetei Pangal' will be held in the first week of January, 2024.The convention will try to include the migrated Meetei Pangals who are settling in Cachar, Hojai, Tripura and Bangladesh during the seven years devastation, he revealed, while urging experts and academicians to take part in the convention and share their thoughts.
