Imphal, September 07 2026: Claiming that the police had not allowed them to stage even democratic protests peacefully since the Assembly session began a few days ago, Imagi Meira questioned what kind of protests would the State Government allow.

Addressing a press briefing at Khoyathong today, Imagi Meira president Th Sujata said the group had been staging a sit-in protest at the site since the Assembly session began, raising several demands before the Government, including the abrogation of the Suspension of Operations (SoO) pact signed with Kuki militant groups.

However, she claimed that a team of Imphal West police removed the banners and other materials from the protest site around last midnight.

She also claimed that no women police personnel were present when the incident took place.

Women police personnel should have accompanied the police team, as the protest was staged exclusively by women, she said.

Sujata also said the protest was democratic in nature.

Claiming that the power supply at the protest site was also deliberately cut off, she alleged that one of the police personnel who arrived to disperse the protesters used inappropriate language.

She said the police personnel told the protesters that the police lock-up was full and that they would instead be taken to a hotel when the protesters asked the police to take them to the lock-up if they were going to be treated unfairly.

The manner in which the police personnel responded was unbecoming of a person in uniform, she said.

Sujata claimed that a large number of women police personnel were deployed at the protest site today as well.

Reminding that the Chief Minister had recently appealed to the public to pursue democratic forms of protest instead of imposing bandhs or blockades, she urged the Chief Minister to clarify what form of protest people should resort to.

She, meanwhile, said that the absence of the Naga MLAs on the last day of the Assembly session over the issue surrounding Deputy Chief Minister Nemcha Kipgen was unfortunate.

She said all the MLAs should have attended the session and discussed the demand for updating the NRC with 1951 as the base year.
