Demand for NRC with 1951 as base year intensifies

Pressing the demand for updation of National Register of Citizens (NRC) with 1951 as the base year, democratic protests continue to gain momentum.
Voicing the said demand, a boat rally was carried out at Loktak lake today.
The rally was jointly organized by Thanga Wangma Youth Union Club (TWYUC), Heisnam Athletic and Cultural Organisation (HECO), All Rural Ideal Cultural Association (ARICA), Karang Island Development Organisation (KIDO), The Loktak Lake Tourism Development Organisation, Karang Island Motor Boat and Boat Association and Thanga Apunba Patmi Lup under the aegis of the Campaign for Just and Fair Delimitation (JFD) .
Speaking to the media, JFD spokesperson Mayengbam Somorjit said that the future of indigenous communities of Manipur is threatened by the influx of illegal immigrants.
Expressing grave concern over the existing scenario, he stressed that concrete measures should be taken up to protect the indigenous communities.
He highlighted that updation of NRC with 1951 as the base year is a must to secure the future of the indigenes.
In line with the JFD's call to raise slogans demanding that a resolution should be passed in the assembly session to update NRC with 1951 as the base year, torch rallies were carried out and slogans were shouted in various parts of Thoubal district yesterday.
A large number of people came out and thronged the streets of Thoubal district with torches in their hands calling for the updation for NRC.
It may be noted that Kiyam Siphai Amurijam Leikai Meira Paibi, Meitei Community Joint Coordinating Committee, - Waithou, Kiyam, Kiyam Siphai, Haokha and Waithou (MCJCC), Thoubal Awang Leikai Apunba Meira and Athokpam Apunba Meira Paibi Lup carried out the demonstration in their respective areas.
