Imphal, July 18 2023:
The United Meitei-Pangal Council (UMPC), Manipur, a conglomerate of 22 Meitei Pangal civil society organisations (CSOs), has stated that the 'unprecedented' violence in the State shouldn't lead to the disintegration of Manipur.
Addressing the media at Manipur Press Club today, spokesperson of the recently formed Council Raees Ahamed Tampak said that UMPC was formed as, like others, Meitei Pangals have a significant role to play to help restore normalcy in trouble-torn Manipur.
Saying that UMPC resolved to protect the integrity of Manipur and face every anti-social element which poses threat to the State, he reiterated that unity and integrity of Manipur should be kept intact.
He expressed desire to hold an awareness programme especially in Meitei-Pangal dominated areas so that they (Meitei Pangals) can mediate and help in breaking the cycle of violence.
Raees Ahamed further expressed desire for every religious leader, CSOs, intellectuals and community leaders to play the central role in restoring normalcy in Manipur.
Asking why the Prime Minister of India is still silent when Manipur has been facing complete lawlessness in the form of killing, arson etc since May 3, the UMPC spokesperson said that the Council nonetheless will submit a memorandum ach to the President, Prime Minister, the United Nations and the Governor to find a solution for the current conflict and restore peace at the earliest.
