UDTA repairs Ukhrul-Jessami route

Of late, commuters have seen tragic turn of events with the deterioration of the Ukhrul-Jessami national highway (NH-202A) with the onset of monsoon season, leading to insecurity for the commuters.
However, lack of interest from state authorities to repair the district's lifeline has taken a serious toll on the well-being of the locals and commuters taking this route.
Against this backdrop, the Ukhrul District Timber Association (UDTA) has taken up the repair works of the highway on their own by pooling in their resources.
Speaking to media persons at the sites on Tuesday, UDTA working president YL Rin informed that the Association decided to take up the repair works in view of the hardships being faced due to the bad condition of the road.
He further highlighted that a few days back, a timber laden truck overturned along the road near Lunghar village, leaving its occupants injured.
He also informed that two excavators and two dumper trucks have been pressed into service for the works, while adding that the repair works woulaspan around 80-90 km from Lunghar village to Jessami sub-division covering all the existing potholes along the stretch.
With an earnest effort, the UDTA has pooled in resources from Association members as well as from well-wishers towards the initiative, he stated.
"We don't know as to how long the repair will take, however we are faithfully dedicating ourselves to accomplish the task to the best of our means," YL Rin said.
He also expressed gratitude to 35 Assam Rifles of Awang Kasom for their contributions.
Taxi drivers operating along the route expressed admiration for the UDTA team's selfless act.
A driver said that they are grateful to UDTA for the initiative, the road has been in a deplorable condition and commuters have been risking their lives crossing the stretch.
The repair works for Ukhrul-Jessami national highway is of utmost importance to the commuters and the UDTA have set an excellent example of mobilising resources and taking up the task of repair despite of government's negligence, they said.
