Many womenfolk sustained injuries when they along with the mothers of the village volunteers who were killed in an attack by Kuki militants in Khamenlok area in the intervening night of June 13 and 14 staged a protest along Imphal-Moreh highway at Singjamei, demanding Chief Minister N Biren to come to the protest site and have a word with them.
The womenfolk were demanding either they be allowed to proceed to the Chief Minister's office or Chief Minister N Biren should come to them.
As the protest went on till late night blocking vehicular movement along the highway, security personnel fired mock bombs and tear gas shells to disperse womenfolk at around 9.45 pm.
Infuriated by the security forces' action, large mobs coming from different directions gathered and confronted the security personnel by pelting stones and firing sling shots.
Security forces, in order to bring the situation under control, fired several rounds of tear gas shells and mock bombs till wee hours.
The mobs destroyed windshields of two buses used for transportation of security personnel along Yaiskul-Singjamei road.
