Imphal, July 07 2023:
The indefinite closure of the Passport Seva Kendra, Imphal of the Ministry of External Affairs (Government of India) at Old Assembly has become problematic to many people especially students and sports persons who need their passports urgently.
According to credible sources, the passport office was closed owing to the Meetei-Kuki clash which broke out after the Tribal Solidarity March of All Tribal Students' Union Manipur (ATSUM) on May 3 turned violent.
It's been over two months since the passport office remained closed, as per the sources.
The closure of the office has caused great inconvenience to people who want to make their Tatkal foreign passport or normal formal passport as they have to go all the way to Guwahati for Tatkal passport and to Dimapur, Shillong or Aizawl for normal passport.
It is said that all the staff of the passport office right from top to bottom are Meeteis.
Citizens of Manipur who have already registered to get their passports have also been distressed by the closure of the office as many of them need their passports urgently.
Among those who need passports urgently include sportspersons and students among others, said the sources and expressed desire for the Government to take up some initiatives.
