Imphal, February 12 2014:
The Centre for Organisation Research and Education (CORE) has in the strongest term condemned the brutal assault on journalist of Imphal Free Press, Aribam Dhananjoy alias Chaoba by IRB personnel in the night of Feb 10.A statement issued by CORE today said that direct assault on media and journalists is a direct challenge to the fundamental rights enshrined in the Constitution of India and a failure to uphold and implement the legal obligations of the International Bill of Human Rights.
CORE demanded dismissal of the personnel involved in the assault from service as their continuance would only compromise the image and status of the IRB and entire police force of the State.
It further demanded sensitisation of Manipur police personnel on socially accepted moral behaviour, human rights standards, laws etc so that they actually have an opportunity to become the kind of lofty service the Home Minister Gaikhangam is claiming repeatedly in every chance at public function.
While condemning the assault of Chaoba by IRB personnel, the Women Action for Development (WAD) has called for active participation of intellectuals and thinkers to bring a transformation in the State.
