Imphal, February 12 2014:
Deputy Chief Minister Gaikhangam, who also holds the Home portfolio expressed serious resentment on the involvement of IRB personnel in the physical assault of a journalist on February 10 night.
Speaking to newspersons after a whirl wind visit to police stations and outposts today, Gaikhangam issued strong instructions to police authorities to ensure that security personnel do not cause harm to the general public.
Not only should the police work for maintenance of law and order but need to ensure that the citizens feel secure, said the Deputy CM who also informed that newly constructed or renovated police stations would be inaugurated at the earliest after consulting the Chief Minister.

Police stations lacking basic infrastructure would also be put up to the CM for necessary measures, maintained Gaikhagam.
Accompanied by Works Minister Dr Kh Ratankumar, MLAs K Ranjit (Sugnu), O Lukhoi (Wangoi), Bira (Kumbi), DGP Shahid Ahmed and other police and civil officials the Home Minister's inspection visit covered 16 police stations and outposts as well as VDF posts.
Taking grim note of many of the security facilities located at low lying areas and suggesting accompanying officials for appropriate measures to ensure that the police stations do not remain under water during the monsoons, the deputy CM was visibly furious on seeing that basic facilities including the building structures, boundary fencing and barracks of Sekmaijin police outpost and naransena IRB post in Thoubal district were yet to be completed.
Similar sentiments were conveyed to the officials when Gaikhangam reached Kakching Khunou and Wangoo Lamkhai police stations, wherein among others there were no toilet facility or power connection.
Some locals with whom the Deputy CM interacted proposed strengthening of security personnel and provision of modern weapons by pointing out that these locations are yet to be free from insurgent elements.
At Leingangtabi village the locals suggested expeditious completion of the building construction for the VDF post along with highlighting that due to distant location of schools the parents feel insecure whenever their children are out of sight.
Upon reaching Moirang police station, some women personnel urged the Home Minister for necessary directive to construct a separate toilet facility.
Moirang AC MLA M Prithviraj, who too joined the inspection visit at Moirang drew the Deputy CM's attention on the need for upgrading the police station and provision of more vehicles.
Summing up his visit to newspersons at the official quarters later in the evening, Gaikhangam opined that Manipur police personnel deserve appreciation for diligently carrying out their assigned tasks inspite of enduring infrastructure inadequacies.
He also conveyed congratulations to Konsam Himalay for the army officer's promotion to Lieutenant General and boxer L Devendro, who won the gold medal at an international competition recently.
