Imphal, February 12 2014:
Agriculture Minister Md Abdul Nasir has clarified that the Havildar of 1st IRB, who assaulted senior reporter of Imphal Free Press Aribam Chaoba near the Northern Gate of Kangla Fort on the night of February 10, is neither his younger brother nor even a distant relative.
Minister Nasir, who is currently out of station, clarified this to media persons over phone at his Babupara quarters here today.
He further said that the accused IRB Havildar has been identified as one Md Mujibur Rahman, a resident of Santhel under Wabagai Assembly Constituency.
It was very unfortunate for the State security force to have assaulted a journalist while returning home after his duty.
He would complain to the Chief Minister and Home Minister to take appropriate action against the IRB personnel who not only assaulted a reporter, but also defamed him by mentioning his name irrelevantly, Nasir stated.
Meanwhile, Centre for Organisation Research & Education (CORE); Women Action for Development (WAD), North East Dialogue Forum (NEDF) and Manipur Cycle Club (MCC) have strongly condemned the brutal assault on Chaoba and demanded the government to book the culprits and punish them as per the law of the country.
