JD (U) for death penalty against drug traders

Taking serious note of drug abuse scenario in Manipur, Janata Dal (United) mooted that death penalty against drug smugglers/traders might be able to check illegal drug smuggling.
Stating that in China and middle east countries drug smugglers face death penalties, State unit JD (U) president M Tombi told media persons at its Babupara office today that drug-related problems has reached the crescendo in Manipur.
Contending that drug smugglers are not only wealthy individuals or have the backing of the rich and influential members of the society but also manage to wriggle out of sticky situation by paying huge some of money to the law enforcing agents, Tombi cautioned that if effective measures are not initiated to check the trend many more Manipuri youngsters will fall prey to drug abuse.
The fact that many individuals are still involved in illegal drug trade inspite of security forces frequently seizing huge quantity of drugs indicate that people are willing to take the risk as the trade ensures easy money, noted the president reiterating that death penalty should mandatory punishment for the illegal drug smugglers.
Strongly lamenting involvement of high ranking security officials in the illegal trade, he proposed that the Government of Manipur initiate stringent measures against those arrested in connection with drug smuggling.
On other issues such as crime against women, Tombi exhorted the women activists to maintain constant vigil to prevent crime against women and children.
Tombi also accused the State Government for failure to ensure hygienic drinking water to the common people.
