Imphal, October 11, 2013:
Manipur unit of JD-U on Friday demanded narcotraffickers and individuals involved in crimes against women and children should be given death penalty.
Addressing a press conference at its office here, JDU Manipur Pradesh president M Tombi insisted that crimes against women and children and drug trafficking network involving sons and relatives of ministers and bureaucrats have persistently gone up in Manipur.
"We want the Government take stringent action against such criminals and award capital punishment if they are found guilty by law courts," Tombi demanded.
In a veiled attack at the Congress Government headed by O Ibobi Singh, the JD-U leader said the present road expansion exercise in the Imphal city has turned out to be a futile effort to ease overcrowding as the road sides are swamped by vehicles, blocking the traffic during rush hour.
"On the other hand, the PHED is not supplying good drinking water to the public because we all know that most of the water pipelines have burst and leaked.
These have made potholes everywhere on the roads," he said.
He also said the state Government is not taking seriously on the drainage system in the city, suggesting that proper drainage system should be kept up in order to save roads from harm.
