The All Manipur United Clubs' Organisation (AMUCO) observed the 'Ningtam Lan Ningsing Numit' in association with the Thangmeiband United Club (TUC) at Cheirao Ching today and paid homage to the freedom fighters who laid down their lives in the fight against the British.
At the observance held at Athoubasinggi Khubam at Cheirao Ching, floral tributes were offered to the busts of Paona Brajabashi and other freedom fighters by the gathering which included leaders of different civil society and student organisations such as Poirei Leimarol Meira Paibee Apunba Lup president Longjam Memchoubi, AMUCO president Pheiroi-jam Nando Luwang, AMAWOVA president Yumkhaibam Kunjarani, MEPWAK president R Rengsongak Koireng, MAKPAL president O Bilashini, AMMUC president T Dyanchand, IFM president Kh Gopen, MSF president Maibam Julius and TUC president Pratap Leishangthem among others.
Addressing the gathering, Ph Nando Luwang said that the local clubs and schools need to organise anniversaries in honour of 'our freedom fighters and noted figures' to make the people specially younger generations aware about their contributions to society and inspire patriotism.
He said that the non-residents cannot overwhelm the indigenous folks if there is a sense of identity and belongingness among ourselves.
Saying that the valour shown by the Manipuri soldiers while fighting against the British who had more advanced weapons make the battle of 1891 even more memorable and inspiring, Nando continued that the value of a battle doesn't lie in the outcome alone but also in the valour shown by the soldiers.
"People must not think that our forefathers went into the battle under a pall of gloom as they displayed exemplary bravery to safeguard the sovereignty of Kangleipak," he added.
