Imphal, April 23 2023:
Kidney and Urology Institute, Medanta Hospital, Gurugram has been carrying out robotic kidney transplant surgery successfully by using 'Robotic Kidney Transplant with Regional Hypothermia' technique since 2013, said Medanta Hospital's senior director & head of Kidney Transplant, Robotics and Urology, Dr Prasun Ghosh.
Dr Prasun Ghosh and Dr Amit Mahapatra, senior consultant of Nephrology & Kidney Transplant addressed a press meet on 'Chronic Kidney Diseases and Kidney Transplant' at Hotel Yaiphaba, Thangal Keithel, here, on Saturday.
Speaking on the occasion, Dr Prasun Ghosh informed that both the donor and recipient of kidney for transplantation underwent open surgery in the past, which involves risk and complications.
However, the issues with surgical and medical complications after kidney transplantation have now been resolved with the introduction of minimally invasive surgery in the field of renal transplantation via robotic kidney transplantation (RKT).
With the changing times, there has been a progressive upgrade towards more transplant hospitals offering laparoscopic donor nephrectomy along with the revolutionary offering - Robotic Kidney Transplantation.
The invention of the hypothermia technique in 2013, which uses ice slush to keep the kidneys cool while they were being robotically implanted, is a significant innovation, Dr Ghosh.
The hospital's outreach programme through interaction with doctors in primary and secondary healthcare has been effective in creating awareness on the advance technologies of minimally invasive kidney transplant methods like robotic kidney transplants, he said.
Beneficiaries of AB-PMJAY and similar schemes of state governments can enjoy benefits of those schemes in the hospital, Dr Ghosh added.
