Plans afoot to establish training centres on drones: Chief Secy

Chief Secretary Dr Rajesh Kumar has stated that the Govern-ment has plans to establish one institute each in every district of the State for training youth on manu-facturing/repairing drones and their applications.
He made this announcement at the opening cere- mony of a 3-day drone awareness training programme held at the campus of Indian Institute of Information Technology at Mantripukhri, today.
The programme is being organised by IIIT, Senapati under the aegis of Department of Information Tech- nology, Government of Manipur.
Speaking as the chief guest, Dr Rajesh Kumar continued that there are varied utilities of a drone as it can be used in surveillance, spraying fertilizers and land mapping, among others.
Saying that the need of a drone is greater in a State like Manipur which has difficult terrain, the Chief Secretary added that a drone could also be deployed to identify places where poppies are planted in large scale.
Dr Rajesh Kumar further stated that establishing a training institute on drones would provide jobs to unemployed youth and improve the GDP of the State.
Further maintaining that Manipur has all the potential to be developed as an important hub for drone techno- logy, Dr Rajesh Kumar stressed on the need to open a certificate course on drone technology at IIIT Manipur.
Director of IIIT Manipur Prof Krishnan Basker said that applications and uses of drone technology in the contemporary world are immense.
Saying that there are more than 220 companies which make drones in India, he added that the country might have the maximum number of drone manufacturing companies in the world by 2030 .
The training programme is being organized to make Manipur a hub for drone technology in North East India, he added.
Director of IT Nambam Deben also attended the programme.
